Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on June 4 said the continued influx of displaced people from Myanmar has become a burden on the state, warning that more refugees may seek shelter in the coming months due to the prevailing situation in the neighbouring country.
Speaking in Shillong, Lalduhoma said the ongoing geopolitical conditions in Myanmar have led to a steady flow of displaced persons into Mizoram.
“Due to the geopolitical condition there, we are getting many displaced people nowadays. It’s likely that we will get more people seeking safety. This has become a burden for us,” the Chief Minister said.
Mizoram, which shares a porous international border with Myanmar and has strong ethnic and cultural ties with communities across the border, has been hosting thousands of refugees who fled following the political turmoil and armed conflict in Myanmar.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the humanitarian, administrative and financial challenges arising from the prolonged refugee crisis. State authorities have repeatedly highlighted the pressure on local resources, infrastructure and welfare services caused by the influx.
Despite the challenges, Mizoram has continued to provide humanitarian assistance and shelter to displaced people from Myanmar, citing historical and ethnic connections between communities on both sides of the border.
Lalduhoma’s comments are expected to renew discussions on the need for greater support from the Centre and coordinated measures to address the humanitarian situation while easing the burden on the northeastern state.
