India stages high-altitude war drill near China border amid regional tensions

India has conducted a major high-altitude military exercise in the disputed Arunachal Pradesh region, validating newly raised offensive units and showcasing expanded war-fighting architecture amid escalating regional tensions.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the war game—codenamed “Poorvi Prachand Prahar”—was held close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. Analysts say the drill signals New Delhi’s increasing militarisation of contested territories and its aggressive forward posture following earlier skirmishes with Pakistan and continued stand-offs with China.

Indian media reports said that three new offensive components, raised after Operation Sindoor in the wake of the May 7–10 clashes with Pakistan, were tested during the drill. These include the Bhairav Battalions, Divyastra artillery batteries, and Ashni drone-strike platoons.

A Bhairav Battalion comprises around 250 personnel drawn from infantry, artillery, air defence and signals, designed as integrated assault teams for rapid cross-domain action. The Divyastra battery combines long-range guns with surveillance drones, loitering munitions and anti-drone tools, while Ashni units provide each infantry battalion with kamikaze drones for precision strikes — a capability Indian commanders previously lacked along sensitive borders.

Reports said these capabilities were fielded alongside manoeuvre units, attack helicopters and Indian Air Force platforms to create what officials described as a “technology-enabled battlespace”. Cutting-edge unmanned systems — night-capable drones, swarm drones and advanced aerial platforms — were used for surveillance and targeting. The exercise also emphasised tri-service interoperability, with the Army coordinating operations with the IAF, Navy elements, ITBP, and other agencies in high-altitude terrain.
