Violence against Christians soars 500% under BJP rule, rights groups alarmed

Christian rights organizations in India have sounded the alarm over a staggering 500% rise in hate crimes against Christians since 2014, exposing the escalating persecution of religious minorities under the BJP-led regime.

According to Kashmir Media Service, rights activists released a detailed report at the Press Club of India in New Delhi, revealing that the number of violent incidents targeting Christians surged from 139 in 2014 to 834 in 2024, totaling nearly 4,959 attacks over 12 years. The report underscores a sustained and systemic campaign of intimidation rather than isolated episodes of violence.

Speaking at the conference, Sister Minakshi denounced the role of Hindutva groups in orchestrating attacks. “There is an organised effort to divide people on the basis of religion,” she said. Michael Williams, a noted rights activist, added that the BJP government routinely “weaponises the false bogey of conversion before every election.”

Advocate Tehmina Arora highlighted horrific cases of violence against tribal Christians, particularly in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, accusing authorities of shielding perpetrators. She cited the case of Kanika Kashyap, a pregnant woman in Bastar who was brutally assaulted for converting to Christianity, leading to a miscarriage. “Even after she filed a police complaint, no action was taken,” Arora said, adding that “even a simple dinner or train journey can now be twisted into allegations of conversion.”

The report documents 579 incidents in just the first nine months of 2025, yet FIRs were filed in only 39 cases. Uttar Pradesh emerged as the worst state, accounting for nearly 32% of the total cases, followed by Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Activists said at least 21 Christians have been killed in hate crimes since 2016, including victims tortured and electrocuted by extremists.

The statement accused Indian police and judiciary of “systematic failure” in protecting minorities and called out the climate of impunity emboldening perpetrators. It warned that social boycotts, forced “ghar wapsi” campaigns, and exclusionary practices are now common tools to force Christians to abandon their faith.

Christian groups have announced a National Christian Convention to be held at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on November 29, aimed at pressing the Union government for constitutional protections and justice for the victims of anti-Christian violence. KMS—13K.
