Kharsang gas well blowout in Arunachal remains uncontrolled, sparks safety concerns

A major gas well blowout at Well No. 76 of the Kharsang Oil Field in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district has remained uncontrolled for the fourth consecutive day, raising serious concerns about industrial safety standards and environmental risks in the ecologically sensitive region.

The blowout occurred on Thursday afternoon during routine well-closing operations when a functional fault developed in the blowout preventer (BOP)—a crucial safety mechanism designed to seal wells and control pressure surges. The malfunction led to an uncontrolled release of high-pressure gas from the newly drilled well.

GeoEnpro Petroleum Ltd (GEPL), which operates the Kharsang field, has sought technical assistance from the crisis management teams of Oil India Limited (OIL) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to contain the situation.

Officials confirmed that specialised equipment and well-control experts have been mobilised to the site, but efforts to cap the well remain ongoing.

Local residents have expressed concern over potential health hazards and environmental impact, as the escaping gas continues to pose risks of fire and contamination.

Authorities have cordoned off the area, and nearby villagers have been advised to maintain a safe distance.
