Apex Body Leh Calls Mass Gathering to Honour Movement Participants and Reaffirm Ladakh’s Democratic Aspirations

Leh, Ladakh: The Apex Body Leh has called for a large public gathering on May 26 at NDS Stadium near Housing Colony, Leh, to honour those who have sacrificed, suffered, and stood at the forefront of Ladakh’s ongoing struggle for democratic rights, constitutional safeguards, and greater political representation.

The programme will recognize members of the Bar Association Leh, medical personnel, social activist Sonam Wangchuk, and several others who were detained following the events of September 24, 2025. Organizers stated that the gathering is intended not only to honour those who faced detention and hardship but also to acknowledge the collective efforts of thousands of Ladakhis who have participated in peaceful and democratic movements over the years.

The event will also pay tribute to the four martyrs who lost their lives during the course of the movement and to numerous individuals who sustained injuries while participating in protests, demonstrations, and public mobilization efforts. Their sacrifices, organizers say, have become symbols of the determination of Ladakh’s people to secure a future in which their identity, environment, culture, and political rights are protected.

The movement in Ladakh has its roots in long-standing concerns regarding governance, representation, and constitutional protections following the region’s reorganization in 2019. While many welcomed the separation of Ladakh from Jammu and Kashmir and its designation as a Union Territory, concerns soon emerged over the absence of a legislative assembly and the limited role of locally elected institutions in decision-making processes.

Civil society organizations, religious bodies, student groups, and community leaders have repeatedly demanded constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, statehood, protection of land and employment rights, and adequate political representation. Supporters of these demands argue that Ladakh’s unique cultural heritage, fragile Himalayan ecosystem, and strategic geographical position require special constitutional mechanisms to ensure that development remains sustainable and locally accountable.

Over the years, numerous delegations, consultations, public demonstrations, hunger strikes, and peaceful campaigns have been organized to draw attention to these concerns. The movement has consistently emphasized non-violence, democratic participation, and dialogue with the Government of India. However, many residents feel that progress on key demands has been slow, contributing to growing public frustration and renewed mobilization across the region.

The September 24, 2025 incident, which led to the detention of several prominent individuals and participants, became a rallying point for many citizens who viewed the developments as part of a broader struggle for democratic rights and public participation. Since then, calls for unity and collective action have intensified across Ladakh.

Apex Body Leh Co-Chairman Chering Dorjay has appealed to Gobas, Nambardars, village representatives, youth organizations, women’s groups, and citizens from Leh, Nubra, Sham, and Changthang to participate in large numbers. According to organizers, the gathering will serve as a platform to honour sacrifice, express solidarity with those affected by the movement, and reaffirm the people’s commitment to pursuing their aspirations through peaceful and democratic means.

As Ladakh continues to debate its political future, the May 26 gathering is expected to become a significant expression of public sentiment, reflecting both remembrance of past sacrifices and determination to secure constitutional, political, and developmental safeguards for future generations.
