The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress, Tripura Mahila Congress, NSUI and Seva Dal staged a statewide sit-in protest at Radhanagar Bus Stand on Thursday, pressing for the immediate fulfillment of a seven-point charter of demands.
The demonstrators accused the ruling BJP government of fostering administrative chaos, escalating unemployment, and failing to curb the growing drug menace in the state.
Addressing the media during the protest, Tripura Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha alleged that the BJP’s governance has plunged the nation into widespread disorder. “Public suffering is intensifying daily. The drug trade is flourishing across Tripura, and addiction is gripping more and more people. Despite its slogan of building a drug-free state, the BJP is turning Tripura into a drug corridor,” Saha said.
He further claimed that the state government is complicit in the proliferation of narcotics, operating under the patronage of the ruling party. “The administration is unable to function independently, and law and order have collapsed. Even sections of the police force have become subservient to political interests,” he added.
The Congress leaders called for urgent action on seven key issues. They demanded strict legal measures against drug traffickers and the immediate recruitment to all vacant government posts. They urged the government to halt the privatization of public education and to empower the police to operate independently in cases of rape, murder, and broader law enforcement failures. Additionally, they pressed for the swift passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill in Parliament and official approval for writing the Kokborok language in Roman script. Lastly, they sought an end to the harassment of auto, tomtom, and e-rickshaw drivers through proper planning, and emphasized the need to curb the soaring prices of essential commodities.
The protest marks a renewed push by the Congress to highlight governance failures and demand accountability from the state administration.
