The Congress alleged that AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi was acting as a “distraction” in the Assam Assembly elections, claiming his presence could benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by dividing opposition votes.
Addressing reporters, Congress leader Pawan Khera said Owaisi had every right to campaign in the state, but questioned his attacks on the Congress instead of the BJP.
“Owaisi also has a right to come and campaign. I think he should know that the ruling party here is BJP. So, if he is fighting an election here against the BJP, why should he attack the Congress? We are not attacking him. We are attacking the BJP,” Khera said.
The Congress leader further alleged that Owaisi’s entry into Assam’s electoral landscape was aimed at diverting attention and fragmenting votes.
“Everybody, any serious student of politics in this country, especially in Assam, knows that all these distractions — Owaisi is another distraction planted by the BJP to try and divide votes. I don’t think it will work,” he added.
