Ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday, December 28 issued an open challenge to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, demanding that the state government conduct a caste census in Assam.
Addressing a massive public rally in Tezpur on the occasion of the 141st Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress, Gogoi asserted that the Congress would return to power in Assam in the 2026 polls. He accused the ruling BJP of avoiding key issues related to social justice and inclusive development, and said a caste census was essential to ensure equitable policy-making.
The rally, led by Gogoi, began from Rajiv Bhavan in Tezpur and proceeded for nearly six kilometres before culminating at Jayamati Field. More than 5,000 Congress leaders and party workers participated in the procession, raising slogans of “Congress Zindabad” and displaying party flags.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leaders, including party national president Mallikarjun Kharge, Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and other top leaders, attended the flag-hoisting ceremony at Indira Bhawan to mark the party’s Foundation Day.
Speaking on the occasion, Kharge said the Indian National Congress has consistently worked for the welfare, empowerment, and inclusive development of the people of India, guided by the principles of democracy, secularism, and social justice.
Rahul Gandhi also extended greetings to party workers across the country and reiterated the Congress party’s commitment to safeguarding the Constitution and democratic values.
In a message posted on social media platform X, the Congress congratulated its members on the Foundation Day and launched a veiled attack on the BJP-led Union government. “The Congress Party fought for India’s independence and worked tirelessly to build the nation. Today, when those in power are spreading hatred, injustice, and oppression, we continue to fight against it with full strength,” the party stated.
The Indian National Congress was founded on December 28, 1885, in Bombay (now Mumbai) at Das Tejpal Sanskrit College, with 72 delegates in attendance. A.O. Hume served as its founding General Secretary, while Vyomesh Chandra Banerjee was appointed as the party’s first President.
