Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have signed a major mutual defence agreement in Riyadh, declaring that any attack on either country will be treated as an attack on both. According to media reports, the agreement legally allows Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal to be considered in the defence of Saudi Arabia if required, underscoring the seriousness of the alliance.
The pact, called the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement, was signed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s state visit to Saudi Arabia. Notably, Pakistan is the only Islamic nation with nuclear weapons.
The pact, signed on Wednesday at Al-Yamamah Palace, marks a significant development in the regional security architecture.
According to a statement from the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office, “any aggression against either country shall be considered an act of aggression against both.” The formalisation of this joint defensive posture is intended to deepen bilateral security ties and reinforce deterrence against external threats.
“Building on a partnership extending nearly eight decades, and grounded in bonds of brotherhood, Islamic solidarity and shared strategic interests, the two sides signed the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement,” a joint statement released after the signing ceremony said.
Prime Minister Sharif was received in Riyadh by Deputy Governor Muhammad bin Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz and was accompanied by key cabinet members, including the foreign, defence, finance, information, and environment ministers, as well as senior advisers. The visit provided the backdrop for the formal signing of the landmark agreement.
